24x30" original acrylic painting on gallery depth canvas, signed on back.

I am a big fan of the strange Fritz Lang western film Rancho Notorious from 1952. In this movie there is a criminal hideout ranch presided over by Marlene Dietrich, who keeps the outlaws in line like a dominatrix mother queen.. The film is hugely artificial, shot entirely on Hollywood sets with painted backdrops. For me, this heightened unreality only deepens its appeal as I feel it relates to my own approach to world-building in painting.

There exists a hideout ranch like that in my mind for women. A place removed from a society that would leash their wildest impulses. Here, girls are free to be very bad… so bad they might even summon a devil. And yet, despite their transgressions, they gather in the cemetery to pay their respects, inviting their ancestors to rise and dance with them one last time.
