Over the past few weeks, I made several attempts to capture moments of mourning interrupted by terror. This is the only painting in which I felt I succeeded. I find myself grieving the very process of mourning, as each time I begin to sit with my feelings, I am confronted by another atrocity.
I often return to cemeteries as a subject. I grew up near a very old cemetery that I visited frequently, and after the birth of my son, I would walk through it with him in his stroller. Many of the graves belonged to babies and mothers. Being there collapsed time for me, making history feel not distant. This was a memory that connected the cycles of life and death in a profound way for me.
